The Ashford heat of the KM Big Quiz raised more than £7,500 for good causes on Friday night.

It was staged at The Stour Centre and attracted 42 teams, with Supernova and The Bonny Cravat neck and neck at the end.

Supernova took the champion’s title after the tiebreaker question.

The event was supported by Barclays, Shepherd Neame, Specsavers, The Stour Centre, Hallett & Co Solicitors, Independent Music Productions, P&O Ferries, Pilgrims Hospices, Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce and round sponsor Larkings.

Kent brewer Shepherd Neame donated the stock for the charity bar which was manned by volunteers from Barclays Ashford branch.

The event raised money for Find A Voice, Pilgrims Hospices and the children’s road safety department at the KM Charity Team.

The top four teams taking part in the KM Big Quiz will be invited to the county final of the event on Sunday, December 2 at Bridgewood Manor Hotel, Medway. Top Ashford teams will take on rivals from Canterbury, Maidstone and Medway.

The small army of volunteers who staged the night were praised by event organiser Kate Baker.

She said: “The generosity of local firms who gave their time and financial support to the event helped make the Big Quiz such a success.”

The support of Shepherd Neame and Barclays was ‘absolutely critical’ to the event’s success.

An energetic group of runners from Office Angels greeted guests as they arrived as well as collecting jokers and answer sheets from tables throughout the night.

“We are grateful to the team at The Stour Centre including Kim Walters and Sue Leaning, McDonalds in Ashford for supplying food for volunteers on the night and the scorers Brian and Deirdre Mewse,” added Mrs Baker.

Raffle prizes were donated by: Spiral Cycles, BMW, AMF Bowling, Boots, M&S, Shepherd Neame, Ashford Leisure Trust and Hornby.
