What’s that Sooty win Canterbury 2013 event
The Canterbury Big Charity Quiz raised almost £6,000 for good causes on Friday night.
Thirty eight teams from across the county took part in the annual battle of wits staged at the University of Kent’s sports centre.
Money will be spilt between the Strode Park Foundation, the League of Friends of Kent and Canterbury Hospital and the children’s road safety department at the KM Charity Team.
The winning team, with a score of 65 points, was What’s that Sooty? from Canterbury, followed closely by previous champions Supernova.
Shepherd Neame donated stock for the charity bar and a small army of volunteers helped stage the event including staff from Herne Bay branch of Barclays who manned the bar and matched every penny raised on the night through the bar and raffle.
Event sponsors included Independent Music Productions, Barclays, Shepherd Neame, Specsavers, The University of Kent’s sports centre, P&O Ferries and Chaucer Insurance.
Quiz rounds were sponsored by Whitefriars, Larkings Chartered Accountants and Farrer-Barnes Recruitment, who are celebrating their 20th Anniversary.
Four teams have won a place at the county final which will be staged in December and will see them take on the top teams at the Maidstone, Ashford and Medway heats of the KM Big Quiz.
The top four were, What’s that Sooty? Supernova, Moomins and Ben’s Babes.
Event organiser Kate Baker said: ““I want to thank all the sponsors and volunteers for their support, particularly Barclays and Shepherd Neame.”
She said they were also grateful to McDonalds in Canterbury for supplying food for volunteers, Newmafruit at Chartham for providing apples for the ploughman’s supper and businesses who supplied raffle prizes including The Bike Warehouse and Cafe du Soleil.
