Walking bus schemes at two Whitstable schools have been recognised at an awards ceremony.
Swalecliffe Community Primary and Joy Lane were the winners for the Canterbury district at the KM Walk to School Awards.
Special guest at the event at the Ramada Maidstone Hotel was conservationist and botanist, professor David Bellamy and winners were presented with their certificates by KM Walk to School sponsors.
Professor Bellamy said he was proud to be involved with walking to school and welcomed the chance to recognise the achievements of those taking part in the schemes.
The Top established Walking Bus title went to the Chestfield and Swalecliffe Walking Bus.
Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, which runs the walk to school schemes, said: “This scheme got off to a great start by winning the Top New Bus 2009 and with the support of the school’s new head teacher, has gone from strength to strength.
“Road safety tests are taken during school time, a great advertisement for the bus, capturing children’s interest.
“Public transport is also used whenever possible to get to walking bus events, giving children the experience of different transport.”
Joy Lane Primary School picked up the award for the Top walking Bus Team.
Mr Dolby said this “outstanding” team was headed by an “excellent” co-ordinator and injects lots of fun into everything they do.
“Winning practices at this school include dressing up for the town’s carnival and Children In Need, awarding certificates to new members of the scheme and raising money for events including a Christmas party.”
The awards were backed by Ground:zero Productions, the Ramada Maidstone Hotel, Veolia Environmental Services, and D.Isom Printers.
KM Walk to School schemes are KCC and Medway Council-led initiatives and are sponsored by Denne, Bel UK (Mini Babybel), Ringway, Veolia, Eurostar, The Co-operative, Southern Water and P&0 Ferries.
