Children join walk to school celebration

David Bellamy and sponsors celebrate Ightham Primary School's success as the Top Walking Bus Team.

Children who are making a difference to the environment joined the celebrations at the 2010 Walk to School Awards.

It was the first time the ceremony has involved primary pupils who take part in the KM Walk to School schemes.

They got the chance to get up on stage and receive their school’s award and meet special guest at the event, conservationist and botanist, professor David Bellamy, an honorary patron of the charity.

Guests at the awards at the Ramada Maidstone Hotel also included volunteers, teaching staff, sponsors and supporters.

Leybourne St Peter and St Paul with their Christmas No 1 award.
They were greeted by the sounds of the Christmas No 1 winning choir Leybourne St Peter and St Paul, who were presented with their prize by Catherine Wilson from Independent Music Productions.

Professor Bellamy said he was proud to be involved with walking to school and welcomed the chance to recognise the achievements of those taking part in the schemes.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, which runs the schemes, said: “This event gives us the chance to applaud the great ideas and commitment of the parents and schools that keep our walking buses rolling and WOW and Walking Bug thriving.”

Mr Dolby also highlighted new initiatives like Bug TV and Buster’s Birthday Club, which will offer discount vouchers and rewards for members.

He thanked all those whose support had helped to make KM Walk to School what it is today and included thanks to Veolia Environmental Services and specialist media company Ground:zero Productions Limited, who made it a morning to remember.

The awards were backed by Ground:zero Productions, the Ramada Maidstone Hotel, Veolia Environmental Services and D.Isom Printers.

KM Walk to School schemes are KCC and Medway Council-led initiatives and are sponsored by Denne, Bel UK (Mini Babybel), Ringway, Veolia, Eurostar, The Co-operative, Southern Water and P&0 Ferries.
