Recognising best practice in schools
The KM Walk to School Team has launched a Green Travel Mark to recognise the good work of schools delivering and promoting sustainable travel initiatives.
Awards can be earned at bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels with additional recognition for schools that support specific schemes such as walking bus.
The criteria to receive a Green Travel Mark is as follows:
Bronze
- Taking Part in a week long green footsteps scheme.
- Promoting the initiative to parents and providing feedback on results.
- Conducting a hands up survey to assess green travel in the week in question.
- Providing the survey figures to the KM Walk to School Team.
The KM Walk to School Team offers a free trial scheme to meet the above criteria. Contact the team to find out more.
Schools meeting the criteria that also operate or support a parent-led walking bus receive a Bronze+ award.
Silver
- Taking Part in a green footsteps scheme running for at least a term.
- Promoting the initiative to parents and providing feedback on results.
- Conducting a hands up survey to assess green travel in the week in question.
- Providing the survey figures to the KM Walk to School Team.
The KM Walk to School Team offers a scheme requiring minimal resources to meet the above criteria. Contact the team to find out more.
Schools meeting the criteria that also operate or support a parent-led walking bus receive a Silver+ award.
Gold
- Taking Part in the popular WOW (Walk on Wednesday) or Active Bug schemes running for the academic year.
- Promoting the initiative to parents and providing feedback on results. We provide newsletters as camera ready artwork and Bug.TV to screen in-class to engage and enthuse children and families.
- Conducting a hands up survey to assess green travel in the week in question.
- Providing the survey figures to the KM Walk to School Team. A member of your admin staff tap this directly into our web-based database.
The KM Walk to School Team provides both WOW and Active Bug in conjunction with Kent County Council and Medway Council. The schemes come with all materials and resources supplied. Contact the team to find out more.
Schools meeting the criteria that also operate or support a parent-led walking bus receive a Gold+ award.
Platinum
- Taking Part in the popular WOW (Walk on Wednesday) or Active Bug schemes running for the academic year.
- Promoting the initiative to parents and providing feedback on results. We provide newsletters as camera ready artwork and Bug.TV to screen in-class to engage and enthuse children and families.
- Conducting a hands up survey to assess green travel in the week in question.
- Providing the survey figures to the KM Walk to School Team. A member of your admin staff tap this directly into our web-based database.
- In addition the school must demonstrate a long term commitment to green travel. This can be achieved by agreeing to take up one of the KM Walk to School Team's schemes for three years.
