Jampires and crazy golf for reading winners

Rosie Sears and Hogwarts Class at Lansdowne Primary School with author Amicia Oldfield

Pupils at a Sittingbourne primary were treated to a prize story-time session with a local author after winning a regional literacy challenge.

Writer Amicia Oldfield read Jampires by Sarah McIntyre and David O’Connell to the children at Lansdowne Primary in Sittingbourne, after the school’s Hogwarts class won the challenge with reading reward scheme Buster’s Book Club.

Hogwarts class were also presented with free-entry vouchers to Pirate Cove crazy-golf adventure Park at Bluewater.

Mrs Oldfield, who lives in Doddington, said: “I had such a lovely time at Lansdowne School.

“Well done to Hogwarts for winning the Buster’s Book Club challenge.”

Buster’s Book Club is run by Inspire Schools. Classes taking part compete for Class of the Week trophies, and winners of monthly inter-school challenges are rewarded with tickets to leisure attractions or visits by celebrity storytellers.

Mrs Oldfield urged other schools and children to persist with their reading, adding: “Perhaps it will be your class that wins it next time. If you keep reading, it could easily be you.”

A specialist in heritage and design, Mrs Oldfield’s books include 20th Century British Castles.

Buster’s coordinator Kay Devine said: “Thank you so much to Amicia, and many congratulations to Lansdowne Primary and Hogwarts class.

“The school really enjoyed their story-time session, and Hogwarts class are sure to have a great day out at Pirate Cove.

“Hopefully, their success with Buster’s will incentivise other schools and pupils to embrace the club, and then they too could be winning similar prizes.”

Buster’s Book Club is supported by the Ernest Cook Trust, Little Cheyne Court wind farm, the Kent Community Foundation, Golding Vision, Orbit, Medway and Kent councils, Specsavers, Leeds Castle, Diggerland, Hornby, Wildwood, Rotary, Acorns Read and Grow, the Crown Foundation, the Gibbons Trust and Westwood Cross.
