Supporting adults and the vulnerable with literacy

Bookbinders is based on the concept of a reading group but leaves behind traditional approaches aimed largely at the individual, and replaces these with group achievement.   The core objective is to encourage reading in a supportive environment and our desired outcomes are to bring about improved literacy skills, improved communication skills, and increased interest in reading and writing.

Since its launch in 2017, over 250 people have enjoyed being part of a Bookbinder’s Reading Group.  We have set up groups in partnership with homelessness charities, Porchlight and Catching Lives as well as Pilgrims Hospice, Age UK and schools who want to run groups with parents who struggle with literacy.

We’ve developed resource materials and guidelines, with information on how to set up a reading group – we also have a library of book to lend to our groups. As the group progresses we have developed guidelines for additional activities – role play and writing, that will encourage the further development of literacy and communication skills. As an incentive we are offering monthly prizes. Those groups who engage best might get a pizza or afternoon tea delivered to their session

“The group got everyone talking about some of the challenging experiences they have had. It helped to build their self-esteem as well as improving confidence and communication skills.”   Porchlight Group Leader Ramsgate

“I’ve been off work for some time and I so look forward to attending these group sessions. It gets me out and we have some wonderful conversations about what we are reading. I love it.”    Folkestone Community Group Member
